Itinerary
-
Day 1 - TUORO SUL LAGO TRASIMENO - CASTIGLIONE DEL LAGO - PANICALE - CITTA' DELLA PIEVE - ORVIETO
Arrival in the morning at Tuoro sul Trasimeno, where you’ll take the ferry to **Isola Maggiore** (2 km perimeter), a picturesque village inhabited since Etrusco-Roman times. St. Francis of Assisi visited here in 1211, and in 1457, the humanist Matteo dell’Isola, who took refuge from the plague in Perugia, wrote the *Trasimenide*, a poem celebrating the Trasimeno lake and the flourishing fishing industry.
Return to Tuoro, pick up your electric car, and transfer to **Castiglione del Lago**, a charming medieval town overlooking the lake. Here, you’ll find the **Rocca del Leone**, built by Frederick II of Swabia. Don’t miss the **Palazzo Ducale** (Ducal Palace), the only small “royal palace” in Umbria, built as the residence of the Marquis of Castiglione del Lago in 1563, and later a duchy in 1617.
Enjoy a free lunch. In the afternoon, visit the town of **Panicale**, with origins dating back to ancient times, located between the Trasimeno Lake valley and the Nestore River valley. Key sites include the **Palazzo del Podestà**, **Palazzo Landi**, **Palazzo Pretorio**, and the Church of **San Sebastiano**, which houses the *Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian* (1505) by Perugino. Next, transfer to **Città della Pieve**, located on a hill overlooking the Valdichiana and the Trasimeno Lake.
The town retains its medieval character with intact walls (built in the early 12th century), the **Rocca** (fortress), and the Church of **Santa Maria dei Bianchi**, which preserves the masterpiece *Adoration of the Magi* by Perugino. Continue to **Orvieto**, check-in at the hotel, dinner.
Overnight at the hotel.
