Itinerary

History is the memory of a people, and without memory, man is reduced to the rank of an inferior animal

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - TUORO SUL LAGO TRASIMENO - CASTIGLIONE DEL LAGO - PANICALE - CITTA' DELLA PIEVE - ORVIETO

Arrival in the morning at Tuoro sul Trasimeno, where you’ll take the ferry to **Isola Maggiore** (2 km perimeter), a picturesque village inhabited since Etrusco-Roman times. St. Francis of Assisi visited here in 1211, and in 1457, the humanist Matteo dell’Isola, who took refuge from the plague in Perugia, wrote the *Trasimenide*, a poem celebrating the Trasimeno lake and the flourishing fishing industry.

Return to Tuoro, pick up your electric car, and transfer to **Castiglione del Lago**, a charming medieval town overlooking the lake. Here, you’ll find the **Rocca del Leone**, built by Frederick II of Swabia. Don’t miss the **Palazzo Ducale** (Ducal Palace), the only small “royal palace” in Umbria, built as the residence of the Marquis of Castiglione del Lago in 1563, and later a duchy in 1617.

Enjoy a free lunch. In the afternoon, visit the town of **Panicale**, with origins dating back to ancient times, located between the Trasimeno Lake valley and the Nestore River valley. Key sites include the **Palazzo del Podestà**, **Palazzo Landi**, **Palazzo Pretorio**, and the Church of **San Sebastiano**, which houses the *Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian* (1505) by Perugino. Next, transfer to **Città della Pieve**, located on a hill overlooking the Valdichiana and the Trasimeno Lake.

The town retains its medieval character with intact walls (built in the early 12th century), the **Rocca** (fortress), and the Church of **Santa Maria dei Bianchi**, which preserves the masterpiece *Adoration of the Magi* by Perugino. Continue to **Orvieto**, check-in at the hotel, dinner.

    Overnight at the hotel.

  • Day 2 - ORVIETO - TERNI

Breakfast at the hotel. Visit **Orvieto**, one of Italy’s oldest cities, a symbol of Etruscan civilization, offering a remarkable blend of ancient and modern art.

Explore the Etruscan well on **Via della Cava**, the **Torre del Moro** with its panoramic terrace, the **Claudio Faina Museum** with Greek, Etruscan, and Roman artifacts, and the **Civic Museum** with materials from the **Cannicella** sacred area. Don’t miss the **Duomo**, one of Italy’s finest examples of late medieval art, famous for the **San Brizio Chapel**.

Enjoy a free lunch. In the afternoon, transfer to **Terni**, the “Steel City,” which also hides ancient treasures. Visit the **Grande Pressa** (Great Press) and the **Obelisco della Lancia di Luce** by Arnaldo Pomodoro.

Terni is also the city of **San Valentino** (St. Valentine), whose Basilica houses his relics. Explore **Piazza della Repubblica**, home to the **Palazzo del Podestà** (neo-Renaissance style) and the **Church of San Pietro in Trivio** (built around the 14th century). Among the religious buildings, the **Church of San Salvatore** is the oldest monument in the city, while the **Duomo** (built in the 17th century) features a Romanesque portal. Visit the **Civic Museum** housed in the **Palazzo Fabrizi**, which narrates the city’s history from the Roman era to the steel industry.

Don’t miss the **Roman Amphitheater**, older than the Colosseum in Rome.

Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

  • Day 3 - TERNI - MARMORE FALLS - PIEDILUCO LAKE - CARSULAE ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE

    Breakfast at the hotel.

The **Marmore Falls** were artificially created by the Roman consul **Curio Dentato** in 271 BC to divert stagnant water from the **Lacus Velinus** into the **Nera River**, a tributary of the Tiber. Today, after several improvements, the falls have three tiers with a total height of 165 meters and offer five walking paths with different perspectives. Continue with a visit to **Piediluco Lake**, surrounded by forested hills, including the **Mount Eco**, which can perfectly echo a whole line of poetry. Afterward, visit the **Carsulae Archaeological Site**, an ancient Roman city along the **Flaminia** road, located on the border between **Interamna Nahars** (Terni) and **Casventum** (San Gemini).

Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

  • Day 4 - TERNI - CASCIA - NORCIA

    Breakfast at the hotel.

Visit the **Rocca Porena**, which holds memories of St. Rita’s life as a young woman, wife, mother, and widow after her husband’s tragic murder. In the afternoon, arrive in **Norcia**, the birthplace of **St. Benedict**, patron of Europe. You can buy local products, particularly cured meats. Don’t miss **Castelluccio di Norcia**, a green gem in the **Sibillini Mountains National Park**.

    Overnight stay at the hotel.

  • Day 5 - NORCIA - FOLIGNO - SPOLETO - ASSISI

    Breakfast at the hotel.

Key monuments include the **Rocca Albornoziana**, **Ponte delle Torri**, and the **Duomo** (cathedral) with a Romanesque portal. Explore **Assisi**, the birthplace of **St. Francis**, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit the **Basilica of St. Francis**, the **Piazza del Comune**, and the **Tempio di Minerva**.

Don’t miss the **Cathedral of San Rufino**, where St. Francis preached and **St. Clare** met Bishop Guido. Continue with a visit to the **Basilica of St. Clare** and the **Eremo delle Carceri** (Hermitage).

In the evening, transfer to **Deruta**, famous for its ceramics, for dinner and overnight stay.
